State Model in SFDC

Hi,

 

Can we implement State Model in SFDC? If so how can we.

 

State Model in the sense Consider a scenario Status Field with three Picklist Values Open, InProgress and Closed

 

Possiblity to change the Status

 

From    To

Open-   InProgress

Open-   Closed

 

System should not allow to change the Status

 

From                To

InProgress-    Open

Closed-           Open
