FIELD_INTEGRITY_EXCEPTION trying to set custom field value through Partner API

I'm attempting to set the value of a custom field on the ContentVersion using the partner API.

 

The following error is being returned:

 

0: Error FIELD_INTEGRITY_EXCEPTION - You cannot set the following custom fields: CustomFieldName__c. Please add them to the page layout for the record type: Default Content Type

 

How do I add this custom field to the page layout for the default content type?

The field can be added to the Content Types from:
Your Name | Setup | Customize | Salesforce CRM Content | Content Types.

 

Then check the Default Content Type for the workspace in question from using instructions from:
https://na3.salesforce.com/help/doc/user_ed.jsp?loc=help&target=content_workspace_detail.htm&section=Salesforce_Content
