Unlock and edit a record

I was hoping to create a button that changes the value of a dropdown field on an opportunity. Here are the steps I would like to do:

Unlock a record
Change field called "Active"
Lock the record back.

I am on Enterprise edition and would love some direction and help. Thanks!

The best way would probably be to build an approval process around it, and have the record locked/unlocked by certain stages in the process, and user permissions.

What's the best practice for having that launch from a button? And how can I do that for multiple records at a time (list button with multi record select)?
