Using URL Rewriting without Sites

Does anyone know if it's possible to use the URL Rewriting functionality for plain old visualforce pages that aren't part of a site?

I don't think you'll be able to do this.  The docs state in several places that its part of force.com sites, and you have to specify it when configuring the sites, which implies it hooks into some under the hood functionality.

Thanks Bob, that's what I thought, but I just wanted some verification from others in the community.  Maybe I'll post it as an idea.
