Is the S-control and StandardController both are same ?

Custom s-controls can contain any type of content that you can display in a browser, for example a Java applet, an Active-X control, an Excel file, or a custom HTML Web form.

 

S-controls are superseeded in SFDC by Visualforce and StandardController is used in Visualforce page which can be used to get standard OOB functionality for an Object.

 

Now salesforce doesn't allow to create any new S-controls for any new organizations.
