Cross object is the way of parent object referrence from a child object. For example, contact is a child object of Account.

So, If you want some of the Account object's field value to be stored or reffered in the contact object, then you can use the cross object formula.

This is meant as cross object referrence. If you have a parent object in an object it is shown as '>', symbol to select their field api names while using formulas.

Cross object referrence will be used in Formulas, Workflows, and Trigger also.

In triggers, you need to refer by appending __r. (Eg. Contact.Account__r.Name)

Hope so this helps you...!
