Currency fields on entities with effective dated currency are not supported

I received the above error message when using the Amount merge field from the Opportunity on a VF page.  Any ideas or work arounds?

Did you ever figure this out?  Do I need to use a double data type on opportunities?  That doesn't sound right...

No, but SF has contacted me to assist.  I need to send them info for them to proceed.
