I haven't tried it, but its my understanding that this will work with the new enhanced mailmerge feature, you may need to call customer support to get them to enable the new mailmerge option for your account.

Yes. We are successfully using Mail Merge with MS Office 2004. It was a little tricky to set up the templates and there are some limitations. We do one-off thank-you letters as payments are processed.
