what is the best path to migrate an existing web app to visual force; it uses html/js/php and mysql - from the looks i have seen so far, i don't hold much hope, please help, don't want to recode this app
Assuming you are talking about hosted on Salesforce the php/mysql wouldn't work and your HTML most likely would have to change.
Depending on how big the app is might not be too bad. Development is pretty quick with Force.
If you are talking about just calling the webservices you probably want to check php forum.
