GoogleAlertstoChatter

As stated on other messages, I realize that this is not a supported App.  However, we are using Beta Chatter and I have followed the steps to install this app - GoogleAlertstoChatter.  It was easy to configure and in theory is very well received by our Sales and Management.  Not sure yet if it is working, since it is not clear where the notifications will be listed - I assume in the Chatter Notifications.   One problem issue is that whenever I do a merge of Accounts or Contacts, whether using Salesforce directly or Demand Tools, I am getting the following error email.  I need to know if this has to do with our Email Server, GoogleAlertstoChatter email, or something else with the APEX class.

Apex script unhandled exception by user/organization: 00500000006uBVl/00D00000000heIs

Failed to invoke future method 'public static void executeGoogleAlertsCallouts(LIST:String, LIST:String, LIST:String)'

caused by: System.NullPointerException: Attempt to de-reference a null object

Class.GoogleAlertToChatter.executeGoogleAlertsCallouts: line 239, column 63 External entry point

Debug Log:

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Thanks for the note.

*) Are you seeing google alert populated to your accounts?

*) Do you see this error only when you attempt merge accounts>  Any other time?

Cheers,

Reid

Thanks for your reply.

I am only "testing" a few accounts, but no, I have not seen anthing posted to any account or notification window.

So far, merging is the only time I see the error message.

workaholicmomworkaholicmom

As an update to my previous response, I have started seeing updates on the Home page in the Chatter view.  However, I am still getting the same error message every time I merge data.  Any suggestions?

ReidCReidC

Hm -- I haven't tested that.  Will do and report back.  Questions:

Are both account signed up with Alerts?

workaholicmomworkaholicmom

No, oddly enough - neither account is.

Brad_HermanBrad_Herman

Thanks for sharing this issue.  The Google Alerts to Chatter application has just been updated to resolve that problem.  Install the new version from the Chatter Labs page: http://wiki.developerforce.com/index.php/Welcome_to_Chatter_Labs

Please post again with any other issues you encounter.

workaholicmomworkaholicmom

Excellent.  Thank you.  I tried to re-install it and the message said that I need to first uninstall the app.  I don't want to disconnect any accounts that anyone is following currently.  Is there a way to see this in an overview so that I can notify reps to go back in and re-sign up?

ReidCReidC

Brad, did you change every class or just one?  I ask b/c if it was easy to simply replace the old code with the new code, that might be fastest.

Thoughts?

Another issue arises that perhaps could lead to a solution for both - although it may still require an uninstall/install.

The alerts that I do receive (awesome app!) usually list two links for each.  One is to news.google.com and one is to the article, etc.  If you click on the news.google.com link, it responds with an error of GOOGLE not found on server.  See below.

Not sure why - but for every good link, there is a news.google.com link that does not.

Your best bet is to uninstall and reinstall the new version - there are some other improvements including the way links are captured.

You will need to re-sign-up for alerts on the relevant accounts, though.  My recommendation is to create a list view for accounts that shows all your accounts with the Google Alert to Chatter Status = Active.  Then copy or screenshot that list to refer to after re-installation.  If you include the Status column in your list, you should be able to unsubscribe those accounts from Google Alerts as a bunch.

Hope that helps.

I am trying to uninstall Google Alerts to Chatter so that I can install it again.  Obviously I was able to install it because it worked except for those few glitches.  I can't seem to uninstall.  I keep going round and round from the Custom Object, to the Custom Tab, to the Visualforce Pages, to the APEX classes and every time I try to delete some component of this, it says that the object is referenced in the Apex Class or the Visualforce page., etc.

Do you have step by step instructions for uninstalling this.  I am usually pretty good at figuring these things out - but after a lot of time invested in this, please HELP.  Thanks.

Brad HermanBrad Herman

Thanks for bringing this up.  Here are the steps I went through to uninstall the application:

  1. Deactivate the Email Service you created (Setup | Develop | Email Services)
  2. Delete the Email Address associated with that Email Service, then delete the Email Service
  3. Uninstall the Google Alert to Chatter Package (Setup | View Installed Packages)

Oh My!  That was so easy and it worked.  Thanks!!!!

Hello,

I just installed the app and activated a few accounts for the feed. I am not receiving any posts. Can someone walk me step by step on the installation? maybe i missed something. I installed the app yesterday 6.22.2010. Thanks!

Brad HermanBrad Herman

Hi adiaz, thanks for installing the application.  Updates are sent by Google on a periodic basis.  Depending on the account search terms you used, it may take a number of hours for an alert to be sent.  Once the alert is set, though, you should see those news stories automatically in the account's chatter feed.

adiazadiaz

You are right! I did see news feeds this morning! Thanks!!

bdubsbdubs

I just installed the app. I thought I did everything right. When I go to the account tab and try to edit Chatter News Alerts Status, the drop down says None and it won't let me change it.

Brad HermanBrad Herman

If your Salesforce has record types on Accounts, you'll need to add the picklist values for each relevant Account record type.

bdubsbdubs

I checked the picklist ant the values are there. I guess I'm not quite sure what I need to do. Would you please elaborate.

Thanks.

bdubsbdubs

I found what you mean. Thanks for your help.

Brad HermanBrad Herman

Glad to hear, for anyone else reading this thread, you can edit your record type settings at:

Setup | App Setup | Customize | Accounts | Record Types

Be sure to click into each relevant record type and edit the "Chatter News Alerts Status" picklist to include both values.

I installed Google Alerts to Chatter but we got a strange problem. Our in-line editing for the Account on the Contact detail view stopped working. If we clicked edit then did the lookup for the account it worked fine. If we tried to do the in-line editing from the Contact detail screen it would not return the selected account from the lookup window. I put a case in with Salesforce support and Tier 3 support confirmed the problem and pointed to the class for Google Alerts to Chatter. Once I unistalled the app in-line editing was fine.

Is anyone else have this problem?

Dan

Brad HermanBrad Herman

Thanks for the feedback, Dan.  And I'm sorry you ran into this in-line editing issue.  I wasn't able to replicate the problem you described in my own salesforce.com, but I'd like to try and figure out what went wrong.  If you're open to investigating this further offline, email me at chatternewsalerts@gmail.com.

adiazadiaz

Is it normal that when some of the links to the articles are click I receive an error? The requested URL not found?

workaholicmomworkaholicmom

I have the same issue.  However, I noticed that there are two links for each article.  The first one that says

Brad HermanBrad Herman

@adiaz and @workaholicmom, thanks for the feedback about broken news links.  Earlier versions of the "Google Alerts to Chatter" / "Chatter News Alerts" app did handle some links poorly.  The problems the community found were fixed, though, and the AppExchange package was updated.  I recommend uninstalling your app and reinstalling the newest version (http://sites.force.com/appexchange/listingDetail?listingId=a0N30000003GJFrEAO).  Please post here about the outcome.

workaholicmomworkaholicmom

Thanks for the reply.  I did that a few weeks ago.  I had requested steps to uninstall.  The uninstall and reinstall worked fine.  Same issue with the news links.

Brad HermanBrad Herman

@workaholicmom.  I'd like to learn more about your setup to help troubleshoot offline.  Please email me with an example search term that's causing problems at chatternewsalerts@gmail.com

geekwannabegeekwannabe

Uninstalled the app and re-installed again (second time).  It works perfectly now!  Thanks.

KeithWKeithW

I had GoogleAlertstoChatter installed successfully, but while trying to change the account that the Chatter post are associated to, I caused it to stop running.

I have twice done an uninstall/reinstall but now the app hangs when I Sign Up a new search term for an account. The status moves to "Confirming" but then nothing else happens. (This happened after both uninstall/reinstalls) Is there any way to tell what is causing this and how to fix it? Thanks.

Brad_HermanBrad_Herman
@KeithW. If you go to Setup | Develop | Apex Classes, check whether the "isValid" glad is checked next to the two NewsAlerts classes. If not, click the "Run All Tests" to trip the flags and try the app again.

Thanks for using Chatter News Alerts.
