Number of records under custom object lookup

I have a lookup based on custom object/fields. The drop down displays 50 records at once..

Is there a way to restrict the number of rec. to display?

Can I have filters on the drop down? I want to display only those records that type = "external"

This sounds like a great feature request, but there is no way to limit or filter that list.
