Locking an object

Is there a way to lock an object  for a single user for setup changes?  We have multiple admins.... when two people are working on the same objects it is causing  lot of issues ....in page Design, fields datatype changes etc..

best way to do this today is to change record types and lock the fields you don't want the user to change.

there's also something on the roadmap to make this much easier
