Cloud Swarm

Can Cloud Swarm allow a user to follow a specific record type of a custom object?

 

If so, should I be installed the managed or unmanaged app?

Definitely!  However, you would have to copy and the Apex code for one of the standard objects and customize it to point to the custom object you want and set up custom rules to reflect whatever criteria you want for the auto-following.  To change the code, you definitely want the Unamanged version of the application.

That is possible without code.  Simply create a workflow rule so that Cases of a certain Record Type change the Type field of the Case.  Then create a Case Swarm Rule using the wizard to make a swarm on the Case Type field.
