Problem with Long Accountowner Names

when trying to update Accountowner Info vie Excel Connector I get for some of our Users an error message because their name is to long. Is there any other way around this then going into SFDC and shorten the name for the upload process and then going back into the user and change it back to the appropiate name?

Use the salesforce.com unique id for that user instead of their name.
