Relation between Assets and Service Contracts

I want to know what is the relation between asset and service contract in salesforce. 

Assets are linked to contract line items.

If an asset is "purchased" (picklist field on assets) that is linked to service contract's contract line item , is there any difference occur in serice contract or total value of service contract?

You can compare compare Assets - Service Contracts - Service Contract line item with Product - Opportunity - Opportunity line item (opportunity product).

When you add an opportunity product to an opportunity, the opportunity product will be linked to a product.

Similarly, When you add a service contract line item to a service contract, the service contract line item will be linked to an asset.

Thank for your response.

But one thing is still not clear is when we add a contract line item it adds product and not the asset . 
we can then edit contract line item and link to asset .
