Website integration using Sites - SLOW

We have an integration with our website using the Sites and the Salesforce API. We have a picklist field for cities. We have added this field as a dropdown on the website and added it for searching purposes. Upon selecting a value from the dropdown the site takes about 10 seconds to load the results. 

Anybody know how to speed up this process?
