Why self relationship is required and what are limitations over it?

Hi,
  While reading about relationships in salesforce I found self relationship ( Lookup relation to same object) , so why this kind of relationship is required can anybody please explain with suitable scenario, and also please specify limitations of it.

Think of an account that has a parent account. Or a project that has a parent project. This would be a lookup to the same object.

The limitations of this are the same limitations of any other relationship. You can only go 4-5 levels when traversion relationships in a query, I believe.
