Type Class in SalesForce

Hi,
When and what is the usecase of 'Type Class' in Sa;esForce. I just read in the SalesForce link, however not able to understand, where this concepts plays role in the implementation:

Hey Kaity, can you try the same in some other browser and see if that picks the MIME correctly:
The browser passes the content type, octet stream is the generic unrecognized type being passed.
