Community portal: connected app or regular app

Hi,
I created a customer community on sales force. The customer should be able to log-in and access information stored on sales force App. Is it necessary that the app on salesforce is a connected app or can it be a regular app?

Hi,

As you have created the community in Salesforce, it will be a part of salesforce. I am not sure regarding the second point of coneected app, will you please elaborate on the same.
