Image for Checkbox not displayed in PDF using Visualforce page with renderas="pdf"

I noticed that this solution is not working anymore since last week:

I can't render any images, I tried with salesforce API 17, 22,29 and 33. 

I set applyHtmlTag="false" on the page to false for api 29 and 33

This works fine in my test org. If you are still facing this issue, could you please post your sample code so that I can have a look?
