Yes this is called the Reverse Security Pyramid. All the security aspects are controlled according to the data sharing among the users and access preventing to the unauthorized users. It is called Reverse Security Pyramid in the Salesforce platform. It explains that the security features ensures us to understand what users CANNOT see in an application, instead of what users can see. The pyramid can be in the link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3_PpO6PzpaGTHk0eVY1aDJBMWM/view (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3_PpO6PzpaGTHk0eVY1aDJBMWM/view" target="_blank)

This includes organization wide defaults, profiles, roles and sharing. You may confuse with these words now. All these will be discussed in the comings sections. As you can see in the pyramid, as it goes up number of users getting access increases. According to this, the bottom of the pyramid is the most restrictive and restriction decreases as we move up.
