Do we have to create a report type to create a report? Can we not directly create it off an custom object?

I have a simple report that has all fields mapped to a single object? Can I not just select an object and create a report instead of creating a report type of that object?

If you wanna create a report throgh the reports and dashboards standard functionality in salesforce you need a Report type to create the report becos that is a protoype which is needed to create a report.

In case you just wanna extract the details in an excel or csv, you can extract it either through Data Loader or Workbench.
