Problem creating any project on Force IDE

I installed the Force IDE and everytinhg went wonderfully, but if I create a new Force.com project there is an error:
User-added image

The same happens if I go to Project Properties and try to download component metadata.
I am using Force Developer Edition.

Old discussions on here suggest that Force IDE may have procy errors (I don't use proxies) or that the IDE is finicky about the VDK version.
I'm so frustrated. Where do I go from here?

- oh and hello from me, just starting my first Salesforce job!

So, while my Eclipse IDE was reinstalling I read the Force IDE v36 release notes. There is a known problem where the v36 API cannot fetch organization details where the organization has not been upgraded. This is explained and a workaround given in this post: https://developer.salesforce.com/forums?id=906F0000000MKqFIAW

You have to install v35 of the Force.com IDE as shown. This resolved my problem. (I'm using Eclipse Mars.1).
