Well. Technically "401" isn't a certification, it's a training course used to "support" the developer certification, but often is used to describe the entry tier developer certification.

There has been a big shake up in the cert department over the last few months (and is ongoing).

There used to be

Developer (401)
Advanced Developer (501)

Admin (201)
Advanced Admin (301)

They are now called:

App Builder
Platform developer 1
Platform developer 2

Admin basic
Admin advanced

So "App builder" is kind of like the old "401" in that it focusses on DEVELOPING the platform, but without code... so just using the declarative features (and 401 never had any code questions)

Platform dev 1 and 2 - these are the exams that including code aspects and cover more the areas that Advanced Developer used to (including an assignment piece in dev 2).

Admin hasn't really changed.

You can find out more here, and open a case with the certification team (http://certification.salesforce.com/)if you'd like to ask them specific questions about what the exams cover.
