You can add one more workflow action to same workflow to create task and add details to the task for your trigger. These tasks will be shown to users on home tab if you have customized your home page layouts to show tasks and activities.

Showing an alert message is usually done via Javascript embedded in some button click or VF page. However for workflows, they are like background actions that take place and are not something that can be linked directly to user interface actions. Hope that makes sense.
