Salesforce OData Integration without using Lightning Connect

Is there a way to achieve Salesforce OData Integration without using Lightning Connect, with or without making use of External Data Source and External Objects.

The folks at Skuid (https://www.skuid.com) have the ability to integrate external data through their custom UI toolkit via Lightning Connect or via native OData. They also support some other integration strategies, but leveraging any of them requires licensing/using their UI facilities.
