I understand that Lightning components can be used in web containers other than salesforce. But the meta data/code resides in force.com platform.
Can anyone help me to understand how it differs from applet?

Performance issue when using lightning component in visualforce page
We are pleased with the feature of including lightning component inside visualforce page but the performance in terms of laoding time is bit long.

Can we use eclipse IDE for lightning development?
When I tried, don't see any technologies related to lightning like component, controllers, renderer etc.

We also use SVN for version tracking and finding hard time in new project which requires lightning framework completely.
